How it works
Is It Down AU answers one question: is this service down, or is it just you? We use three kinds of evidence, keep them separate, and tell you which one a status comes from.
1. Official provider information
Some providers publish a machine-readable status feed. Right now we read the official feed for ANZ, Discord, refreshed at most every 5 minutes. This is the only evidence we use to say a provider has reported an outage, a problem or maintenance.
For every other service, we link to the provider’s official status page where one exists, and say so plainly where we could not find one. We do not copy or scrape those pages.
2. Automated homepage checks
Our server checks whether each service’s homepage answers. These checks currently run from: Sydney, Australia (Fly.io syd). We never label a check as Australian unless it runs from an Australian location.
A homepage answering does not mean the service works. Banking sign-in, payments, mobile and broadband networks, and apps can all fail while the homepage loads. A failed check can also be our own network’s fault. So these checks are shown as evidence only, and never decide the headline status. Checks older than 30 minutes are treated as out of date.
3. Community reports
Anyone can report a problem. Reports are unverified and depend on who happens to visit this site, so we treat them cautiously:
- We only say “People are reporting problems” when there are at least 10 reports in the last hour from at least 5 different people.
- Community reports alone never produce an “outage” status.
- We only comment on a state or territory when there are at least 10 reports in 24 hours and most of them come from one place.
- Each person can report a service once every 30 minutes, and at most 6 times an hour in total.
We do not yet compare reports against a normal baseline, because there is not enough history. Until there is, we will not claim to have detected an outage statistically.
What “Status unknown” means
It means we do not have enough evidence to say either way. That is the most common status, and it is the honest one: no official feed, no clear pattern of reports.
Times
Times are shown in Australian time with the zone named (for example AEDT or AWST). Choose your state on a service page to see your local time.
Independence
Is It Down AU is independent. We are not affiliated with any provider listed, and we cannot help with your account. See privacy and data for what we store.
